Tom's life started revolving around Summer, and this wasn't enough for her. She wanted him to pursue his dream of being an architect. Later Tom quit his job and started pursuing his dream which would have been good enough for her, but it was already too late as she was engaged.

I never want to do this in the first place. It's so hard to let go and it's so painful. But I know this is the best for me. Unrequited love is painful, like a disease infecting your body, heart, and soul. Every time I tell this story, I feel foolish. It questions my worth; even though others say I'm attractive and deserving of love, if this one person doesn't reciprocate, it feels like my world is crumbling. It really takes life experiences to truly appreciate music and movies. Both the song and the music were pretty cheesy to me before I had my own heartbreak and now I have developed my own meaning for the movie and music based on my own relationship and they're so meaningful to me now.
